She entered the restaurant owned by Violet’s cousin, Jacob Star. He was actually a step cousin, but she didn’t discriminate. Violet mentally traced the family tree for distraction. Jacob and Brianna were the children of her Aunt Hailey, and the stepkids of her Uncle Joey. They had been in her life for as long as she could remember. Who cared about age gaps? It didn’t matter that they were older than her by almost twenty years.

Jacob shocked everyone years ago when he returned to River’s End after kicking his drug addiction. He almost immediately witnessed and partially prevented a mass shooting at this very café. Later, he married the owner, Luna. They redid the entire café after that ordeal and ran it together now. They also had two kids of their own.

Violet followed Iris and Quinn, averting her gaze after saying a remote, casual greeting to the hostess she passed. She saw a large table with a family sprawled all along it. She had to skirt their chairs. She smiled faintly at the antsy, squirming, little kids. One kid was coloring vigorously on the kid’s menu, while two spoke loudly with intermittent giggles, and another sobbed beside an adult woman who was comforting her.

It so reminded her of her family. Anymore, when the Rydells got together for a family dinner, they pretty much had to shut down the restaurant at the arena, since there were so many of them.

Of course, Violet hadn’t attended one in two years. She adamantly refused no matter how hard the others begged her to reconsider. She didn’t mind going to this café. But never the one in the arena. That fucking arena.

Besides her excessively wealthy brother-in-law, Quinn, loved this place. So she often came here with them.

Her gaze drifted over the table… and she stopped dead.

Rooted to the spot.

Her jaw unhinged; her eyes popped and she blinked. No. Oh, fucking hell no.

Gage. Gage Sullivan. Of course. Not even a month passed and she runs into him? She probably saw him at other times over the years but they didn’t know it. She sure didn’t fail to see him now.

He was wiping his mouth with a napkin when his gaze clashed with hers and made her almost collapse into a fetal ball. His eyes grew round with surprise and he paused before slowly lowering his napkin without releasing his gaze on her.

She felt like he physically controlled her as he rose to his feet, sliding his chair back and setting the napkin next to his plate. She gulped. Audibly. Her hand came to her neck and she became almost dizzy with the impact of the moment.

Gage.

She closed her eyes for a moment to let the feelings rush from her chest into her entire body. Adrenaline made her feel warm, but this was so much more. There were no words for how she felt.

Her eyes scanned the table. There they all sat, she was sure it was the family he talked so often about. An older couple in their late sixties, his parents, no doubt.
